Charlotte Reston
Charlotte achieved an integrated master’s degree in Virology and Immunology in the school of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Bristol. This involved working with influenza A, coronavirus 229E, pneumonia virus of mice, respiratory syncytial virus, and SARS-CoV-2, working on two main research areas – investigating viral entry mechanisms into cells and RNA modifications to viral genomic material. She graduated in 2023 and spent the summer before starting her PhD continuing work on her master’s topic as a research assistant.
Charlotte’s PhD is with the Pirbright Institute and the University of Bristol, as part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Aerosol Science. This programme aims to bring together researchers from various backgrounds to understand a variety of topics, from transmission of disease to areas such as drug delivery, climate change, and material science. After a first year of training in core aerosol science and development of a PhD research proposal, she moved to the Pirbright Institute to start work investigating transmission of foot-and-mouth disease virus in aerosols, and how environmental conditions can affect this virus’ survival.
