At The Pirbright Institute, we are deeply committed to the highest standards of animal care in research, adhering to strict ethical guidelines and legislation.

We strive to exceed these standards, ensuring that animals are treated with compassion and respect while advancing our research.

The Institute was one of 13 organisations who received the first Leader in Openness award from Understanding Animal Research (UAR) in 2019.

The award, given for three years (2019 - 2022) recognised Pirbright’s commitment to the UAR Concordat on Openness on Animal Research.

The Institute continues to champion transparency and openness on using animals in research and has been awarded the Leader in Openness Award for 2022-2025.

The work conducted at Pirbright is vital for improving livestock welfare both in the UK and globally. Our research, which carefully and proportionately involves the use of animals, is crucial for developing new methods to control viral diseases, ultimately protecting the wellbeing of animals and supporting the livelihoods of farmers worldwide.
