Bee Denley-Currie

Laboratory Analyst

Bee has always had an interest in research, starting by digging through flowerbeds in the garden to find pottery and bone to identify.

They studied Bioarchaeology as an undergraduate at the University of York, then changed tack by gaining a Master’s degree in Forensic Science from the University of Lincoln as the highest graded student in the cohort. Their thesis was an attempt to create a novel methodology for species identification of archaeological bone using a magnetic solid phase extraction technique. Following this, Bee left the lab for a time to work as a researcher of antiquarian books and ephemera.

In 2022, they joined the Non-Vesicular Reference Laboratory (NVRL) at The Pirbright Institute as a laboratory technician working to support the day-to-day running of the NVRL, developing key lab knowledge and skills.

They became a laboratory analyst in August 2022, and now carry out standard and diagnostic testing of a variety of viral diseases including Bluetongue virus, African horse sickness virus, ASFV, Capripox viruses, Epizootic haemorrhagic disease virus and Peste des petits ruminants virus; help to maintain the lab’s accreditation; and support various research projects within the lab group.

Bee has a strong interest in data analysis and has set a personal goal to learn python.
