The Pirbright Institute serves as a National Capability to prevent and control viral diseases of livestock.

We play a critical role in protecting the UK, acting swiftly to detect and control outbreaks.

Equipped with specialised facilities and extensive expertise, we provide diagnostic services and surveillance for a range of pathogens, contributing to global animal and human health.

We have 10 Reference Laboratories for viral diseases of livestock which work on behalf of national and international organisations, such as the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

Our facilities are unique within the UK and are not replicated elsewhere within the higher education or commercial animal health sectors.

Under the National Capability scheme we are able to offer:

  • Research and development
  • Facilities and services
  • Materials and reagents
