Our PhD students are supervised by internationally recognised experts working to create real-world impact, addressing critical challenges in infectious disease research.
The Institute maintains an environment that fosters innovation, collaboration, and the development of skills that will shape your career in science.
PhD supervision and training
Each PhD student is primarily supervised by a Principal Pirbright Institute Supervisor, with additional support from a Co-supervisor(s).
Additionally, each student has an external supervisory team from the university where they are registered, ensuring a comprehensive support structure. This external supervisory team also participates in annual assessments, fostering close collaboration between the Institute and universities. An external examiner provides further support and serves as an independent assessor.
Students are expected to attend a range of seminars, including a programme of talks by invited speakers, as well as weekly internal seminars. Participation in these seminars, along with Journal Clubs, helps students develop a broad understanding of their field and critical analysis skills.
Training also includes attending scientific society meetings, laboratory courses, and participation in a comprehensive transferable skills programme, covering areas such as presentation skills, networking, writing, imposter syndrome, CV preparation, and interview techniques, designed to support long-term career development.
The Institute's Academic Committee oversees all postgraduate student matters, from training policy to programme implementation.
Monitoring student progress
Student progress is carefully monitored throughout the period of study to ensure that you are progressing as expected and any problems are identified and resolved early.
At the end of the first and second years, there is a more extensive review whereby the student must prepare a report on their research progress and undertake a mini viva conducted by University and Pirbright academic staff (reviews will vary depending on the registering university).
Confirmation of registration for a PhD and continued funding is contingent on a satisfactory outcome at these review points.
Student support and wellbeing
We have a supportive environment for students at The Pirbright Institute.
We guarantee on-site accommodation for all first-year students at a reasonable rent. We also offer enhanced stipends to account for the higher cost of living in Surrey.
Beyond accommodation, we offer a range of amenities to enhance your student experience including a social club, onsite gym and subsidised restaurant.
In addition to their Principal and Co-Supervisors, students can seek support from the Academic Affairs team.
